Become A Compositing Artist for Harmony!

The animation industry is actively looking for compositing artists, people with animation education, who have worked with Toon-Boom Harmony and know how to  composite.

If you’ve completed  a diploma or degree in animation, have worked with Harmony software, and are looking for your niche in the industry, successful completion of  industry pro Sonya Hassan- Carey‘s  Certificate Workshop in Compositing for Harmony will bring you to the level of someone with at least 6 months compositing work experience !

What will your job be as a compositing artist?

You’ll be responsible for constructing the final image of the film or series by combining layers of FX, animation and background elements into  final composite shots, fulfilling each shot’s requirements.

As a compositing artist, you’ll need artistic sensibilities in the areas of 2D/3D animation compositing, rotoscoping, warping and particles, morphing blue/green screen keying and colour correction. All of this will be covered in our new professional development certificate workshop!.

Who is your instructor?

Sonya Hassan-Carey
Sonya Hassan-Carey

Sonya Hassan-Carey, currently Head of Operations for Portfolio Entertainment in Toronto (www.portfolioentertainment.com), is an animation professional with 25 years of industry experience, including compositing, producing, VFX, recruiting talent, and training studio employees for Toon Boom Harmony productions.

Will you need other qualifications to be employable as a compositing artist?

If you choose to stay in a 2D Harmony environment, this course will do the trick.  If you choose to go into a VFX or 3d studio, you’ll  need to add some understanding of Nuke, Maya and Fusion.

About the certificate workshop:   class size is limited to 10 to allow for individual instruction and mentoring.

This workshop will meet 8 Sundays, beginning February 26, 10 AM to 1 PM, one hour lunch break, and an afternoon class from 2 PM to 5 PM.

To apply for this workshop please email info@maxthemutt.com. To meet Ministry of Education guidelines, we will need evidence of your animation diploma or certificate. Knowledge of the basic Harmony program is a pre-requisite. If you have no animation clip, or transcript showing you’ve completed Intro Harmony, you can apply and Ms Carey will contact you to discuss your ability to successfully participate in the workshop   Once accepted, we’ll email your invoice and payment instructions.

The Royal Winter Fair, Annual Drawing Event for MtM Students & Faculty 2016

Every year Max the Mutt takes a trip to the Royal Winter Fair. The fair is filled with excellent exhibits and animal shows, offering an opportunity for our students to practice their animal drawing, and gain more experience with on location studies that include people as well as animals.

Here are some thoughts from one of Max the Mutt’s Drawing Instructors, Ed Shawcross, about this year’s visit:

20161110_144547
..… the event was quite successful with most students seeking feedback and exhibiting excitement as they worked throughout the copious arenas finding of diverse subject matter to draw. It was also great to see some recent grads who joined us, continuing the tradition started at MtM, and now attend to draw for themselves.

Ian Culley, a former instructor, was a special surprise guest. I was delighted to have him assist us as an added member of the teaching team.
Tina Seemann, Director of Animation, offering animal drawing advice at the Royal Winter Fair
Tina Seemann, who heads the Animation Program and also instructs Animal Drawing, offering drawing advice at the Royal Winter Fair.

Tina made a good suggestion for next year:  perhaps we should extend an offer to all our grads to join us on the day we visit the Royal Winter Fair! They could benefit from the reduced entry fee and enjoy the camaraderie of drawing on location with  mentors and peers.

A quick note of thanks to everyone for all efforts- both physical and artistic – as we worked with the students on location at the Royal Winter Fair. A big hurrah goes to Noelle for organizing the tickets and scheduling the event; it went as smoothly as silk

Dreamworks Directors & Family Channel Visit Max the Mutt!

Max the Mutt is honoured to be chosen as the only Toronto college visited by DreamWorks Director Mike Mitchell (left) & Co-Director Walt Dohrn (right),  who are touring internationally to promote the new DreamWorks animated feature “Trolls.”

Their presentation included a look at pre-production development and it was a riveting, inspiring account of the development of their initial idea for the film and the entire film making process. Following this presentation, Family Channel host Deeprah, took the stage and interviewed the two Trolls Directors, and then turned to our students and asked for questions. Following this, Max the Mutt Directors, Maxine Schacker and Tina Seemann, were interviewed about our unique college and the programs we offer.

The Family Channel program will be aired November 7th on Family Channel.

It was, indeed, an honour for Max the Mutt to be chosen for this visit. The students are still discussing all the great information that was shared with them! On behalf of all the students and faculty who were so energized by this incredible experience, we thank you Mike and Walt for sharing your excitement about Trolls with us.  This is a beautifully conceived and executed animated feature film aimed at both children and adults and filled with positive energy. We also thank 20th century Fox, and we thank the Family Channel.

Students and faculty were all invited to a preview of the film held at TIFF last night and a great time was had by all!

Alwyn Hunt – The Rookies – Paid Max the Mutt A Visit

Max the Mutt was happy this Tuesday to welcome Alwyn Hunt from ‘The Rookies,’  www.therookies.co.  Alwyn, visiting from Australia, has worked in VFX in England, Toronto, as well as Australia, and is now working full time on The Rookies. Part of his job is travelling  to visit recruiters and art directors at companies all over the world. The purpose of The Rookies is to foster talent and help young artists launch their careers.

In addition to stressing that the entertainment arts industries are now global, Alwyn shared some valuable insights about how to approach professionals to ask for feedback. He encouraged students to research studios that they might wish to work for early on to find out the level of skills necessary to get hired..
“Don’t wait until you graduate-“Alwyn said. “You want to be ahead of the curve, not beginning your research when you have grads from all the schools to compete with.”

Alwyn also discussed why uploading work onto the The Rookies website is an excellent  idea, a way to create a page about yourself and your work so that recruiters and artists world wide can see your work. In addition, top professionals will judge what you’ve done, rate your work (the rating is not made public), and give you an idea of what you need to do to create a competitive portfolio.
Apart from valuable exposure, the sponsors for this website include major animation and video game companies who award internships. There are also cash awards.

The Rookies also has school pages, and top schools (Max the Mutt included) are profiled. Last year was the first time MTM participated, and, although it was announced late, most of the students who entered made it to the finals! We hope that this year all MTM students will take advantage of this opportunity and post their work.

After his presentation, Alwyn  looked at work from many animation, concept art, and illustration students and seemed genuinely impressed by what he saw. “It’s not the size of the school,” he said, “but the talent and drive of the students to make it in these industries.” We can’t wait until June when this years entries will be judged! We think we’ll do very, very well!

Thanks for the visit, Alwyn!
