A chat with Dave Ross: Comic Book Artist and MTM Instructor

Dave Ross, comic book artist and a long time instructor at MTM, loves to tell stories, not with words, but with pictures. That’s why he became an illustrator – specifically, a comic book illustrator.

“Tell a story, whether it’s your own or someone else’s”, advises Ross

MTM Director of Outreach, Natalie Kauffman, “sat down” (virtually, that is) with Dave Ross to chat with him about his career as a comic book artist, his teaching career, his book and more. So what does Ross, who has worked for Marvel, DC Comics and Darkhorse, amongst other publications, and has drawn such well-known characters as Captain America, Spiderman, Iron Man, Batgirl and Daredevil (and many more), recommend to those who want to make it in the big leagues? “Get out there and get yourself published.” Start off with an Indie comic, or self publish. “Tell a story, whether it’s your own or someone else’s, but show publishers that you can put together a visual story from start to finish – that’s the key.”

Ross was instrumental in the design of MTM’s Illustration Curriculum

As one of the founders of the Illustration and Storytelling for Sequential Arts diploma program at MTM, Ross has been instrumental in helping to design the curriculum over the years. When asked why Illustration should be a four-year diploma program for a college (upgraded from our original three-year diploma program), Ross has a simple answer: we teach everything you need to know in order to have a life long career in illustration. “It’s a really broad base of skills that you need”, Ross explains. “With a fourth year, we’re able to diversify some of the learning”. He goes on to explain that he’s now able to spend more time on teaching areas of study that there wasn’t time for before, which serves to make students stronger in the field and ready for a wider variety of potential career options.

Dave Ross’s book is used by art students all around the globe

Ross also talks about making his book, Freehand Figure Drawing for Illustrators, which has been widely received, translated into several languages (Japanese, Korean, Mainland Chinese) and has had him tour places such as Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia. He has essentially crafted the book around courses that he teaches at MTM – constructive figure drawing – and has designed the book to be like a text book with exercises after each chapter. Ross loved meeting art students from around the globe, and can’t wait to get back on his book tour again, once it’s safe to do so. “You can go to the other side of the world and essentially be dealing with the same challenges with the students there,” Ross comments. Speaking of these artistic challenges, Ross notes that “the struggle is a universal struggle” – a struggle that he is happy to help students overcome!

This is a must-watch interview for anyone wanting to pursue a career in illustration, particularly in a comic book or graphic novel illustration. It’s also great for any of the multitudes of comic book lovers or fans of Dave Ross!

MTM Featured Instructor: Dave Ross – Canadian Comic Illustrator

Dave Ross wears lots of hats. Not because of the weather, but for his love of just about every aspect of sequential arts. His main ‘hat’ is: Dave Ross, Comic Artist.

Dave has achieved the highest levels of his craft as a comic book illustrator. This includes working for the biggest, most recognizable companies in the business, including Marvel Comics, DC Comics and Dark Horse Comics.

Instructor at Max the Mutt

All of us here at Max the Mutt are especially appreciative and proud of the fact that Dave chose to pass along his experience and knowledge to the next generation of sequential artists. As an Instructor, here at the College, Dave works with students in the Constructive Figure Drawing, Structural Drawing and Intermediate & Advanced Comic Book Composition Penciling courses.

Dave actually helped establish MTM’s Illustration & Storytelling for Sequential Arts Diploma Program, which was the first of its kind in Canada.

Why did Dave choose MTM to pursue his interest as an instructor? Here’s what he says about MTM on his website at www.daverossart.com:

“All (Concept Art and Sequential Arts) are full diploma programs and all share the Founders’ commitment to first and foremost passing on solid drawing and painting skills to the students.

One of the things that I appreciate most about the school is that the class sizes are capped at 20 students. A good amount of ‘one on one time’ between student and teacher is crucial in this field of learning and the smaller class sizes ensure that the students are not shortchanged.”

Dave Ross’ Other Hats

When not passing along his wisdom, or working as an illustrator, concept artist and/or writer; with characters and character development for the most famous names in comics, including Captain America, Spiderman, Batgirl, Star Trek and Daredevil; Dave remains active in the business.

Author: Dave has published an instructional book “Freehand Figure Drawing for Illustrators: Mastering the Art of Drawing from Memory”, which, according to Dave, is to help readers “be able to draw off the top of their heads and figure any camera angle any pose that you can imagine.”

Guest Artist: Dave has participated in numerous national and international comic conventions and book signings around the world, including Toronto, New York, Hong Kong Singapore and Thailand.

“The Life and Times of Sir Reginald Tubb” Gets Rave Review from Kirkus!

Co-director Tina Seemann

“The Life and Times of Sir Reginald Tubb,” illustrated by Tina Seemann , co-director of Max the Mutt, colour by MTM grad Laura Faber, written by David Schacker (one of MTM’s founders), received a rave review from Krikus :

Kirkus has been an authoritative voice in book discovery for 80 years. Kirkus Reviews magazine gives industry professionals a sneak peek at the most notable books being published weeks before they’re released.

Here’s an excerpt from the review:  “The charming illustrations are colorful, well-detailed, and dynamic as well as expressive; Seemann… manages to make a bathtub one of the book’s most animated characters….A whimsical delight with well-written verse, excellent illustrations, and appealing characters.”

About Davd Schacker’s writing: “His rollicking verse is clever, fresh, appealing, and very funny. ”

Congratulations to all on a job well done.

Just out! Children’s book illustrated by Max the Mutt’s Tina Seemann!

Max the Mutt is proud to announce the release of a delightful new book for children, written by one of MTM’s three co-founders David Schacker, and illustrated by Max the Mutt’s Tina Seemann, Director of MTM’s Animation Diploma Program — with colour by 2016 MTM graduate Laura Faber.

At last is a story celebrating that unsung hero of family life, the bathtub! Neglected no longer, this noble fixture finally gets its due, magically coming to life as the central character in this tale set in the topsy-turvy world of the Forest Green.”

The delightful illustrations by MTM’s Tina Seemann, coloured in a dreamlike watercolour-effect palette by 2016 graduate Laura Faber, and the gentle humour of the Gilbertian rhyming verse by David Schacker, make this a charmingly unique offering for young (including very young) and adult readers.

Congratulations to everyone, and special thanks to book designer Jelena Reljic!

The Royal Winter Fair, Annual Drawing Event for MtM Students & Faculty 2016

Every year Max the Mutt takes a trip to the Royal Winter Fair. The fair is filled with excellent exhibits and animal shows, offering an opportunity for our students to practice their animal drawing, and gain more experience with on location studies that include people as well as animals.

Here are some thoughts from one of Max the Mutt’s Drawing Instructors, Ed Shawcross, about this year’s visit:

20161110_144547
..… the event was quite successful with most students seeking feedback and exhibiting excitement as they worked throughout the copious arenas finding of diverse subject matter to draw. It was also great to see some recent grads who joined us, continuing the tradition started at MtM, and now attend to draw for themselves.

Ian Culley, a former instructor, was a special surprise guest. I was delighted to have him assist us as an added member of the teaching team.

Tina made a good suggestion for next year:  perhaps we should extend an offer to all our grads to join us on the day we visit the Royal Winter Fair! They could benefit from the reduced entry fee and enjoy the camaraderie of drawing on location with  mentors and peers.

A quick note of thanks to everyone for all efforts- both physical and artistic – as we worked with the students on location at the Royal Winter Fair. A big hurrah goes to Noelle for organizing the tickets and scheduling the event; it went as smoothly as silk

Concept Artist Frank Hong Joins Max the Mutt Faculty !

Max the Mutt has always featured strong community, instructors who are working professionals, and small class size. After teaching several guest classes in Advanced Environment Design & Painting in Photoshop, and despite his busy schedule as Creative Director at Crush Visual Inc. in Toronto, top concept artist Frank Hong agreed yesterday to take on some classes for CA students  beginning September 2016! This is exciting news for all of us. Frank joins a wonderful faculty, led by Concept Art Program Coordinator Jonathan Standing.

He told me he really enjoyed the environment and the enthusiasm of the students. We are all excited to have him as part of our community and look forward to getting to know him better.

Dave ‘s new book is fresh off the press! Published by Random House, it teaches how to draw the figure without reference.

Dave writes: “I recently completed work on an instructional book titled FREEHAND FIGURE DRAWING FOR ILLUSTRATORS, due for general release on July 28, 2015.
